Engels aiming to experience 'amazing feeling' of treble in first season

The 21-year-old already has two trophies to his name since joining Celtic last summer.

Arne Engels says it would be an “amazing feeling” to win a treble in his first season at Celtic as he looks forward to Saturday’s Scottish Cup final.

The 21-year-old Belgium international joined Brendan Rodgers’ team from Bundesliga side Augsburg for a club record fee in the summer.

He has already lifted the League Cup and Premiership title this season and is now keen to complete a domestic clean sweep at Hampden this weekend.

The Hoops take on Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen side at the national stadium as they look to secure their sixth domestic treble in nine seasons and 22nd trophy from the last 27 available.

However, Engels says it hasn’t been as easy as some on the outside might think looking at those numbers and insists they have had to be at the top of their game all season to give them the opportunity.

He said: “It feels amazing to get the opportunity, it is a really great feeling, and we have worked for it the whole year. It’s a chance to get a treble and, for me, it will be an amazing feeling if we can get that.

“You know that if you are playing for Celtic, then you are going to have the chance to win trophies, so that was a big reason for me coming here, knowing we have to compete in every competition.

“We have done really well this season, it’s not something that happens as often at other clubs and it’s not easy, maybe not as easy as some people are saying, but we have done amazing so far and hopefully we can end it with another trophy.”

Engels has watched clips of the celebrations that followed last season’s Scottish Cup final victory, and he was also part of the side that won the League Cup earlier this campaign, and he is hoping to bring the same joy to the green and white end of Hampden on Saturday.

He said: “It’s always nice to see the fans happy, and I think we have a lot of great experiences at Hampden Park, so hopefully we can keep this up, keep the momentum, and see a lot of happy faces there again.”
