Andy Murray was outclassed by Roberto Bautista Agut as he went out in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel.
The Scot had celebrated his 26th win of the season on Tuesday – his most in any year since 2016 – but he was unable to add to that against the Spaniard, who handed down a 6-3 6-2 defeat.
Murray will have a sense of regret as he led by a break in the first set at 2-1 and then had chances for another break but a poor service game at 3-4 proved costly as Bautista Agut broke and then served it out.
An immediate break of serve in the second set put Bautista Agut in firm control and there were just too many errors coming from Murray’s racket for him to be in contention.
He did squander three break-back points and that was fatal as Bautista Agut later took a second break and closed out a routine win.
Murray, whose 2022 season will come to a close in Paris next week, will not be keen to play Bautista Agut any time soon as the Spaniard also beat him 6-0 6-1 in Doha in what was one of his worst career defeats.
