Andy Murray has joined an online campaign to find a missing tennis player who disappeared after making sexual abuse allegations against a former government official in China.
Peng Shuai, a former Wimbledon doubles champion, made the accusations in a social media post earlier this month that claimed the man forced her to have sex with him.
The incident allegedly took place after the high ranking official in the ruling Chinese Communist Party had invited her to play tennis at his home.
The post, made on Chinese social media site Weibo, was removed after 20 mins and the 35-year-old has not been seen or heard from since.
Murray has now joined the likes of Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams to express their concerns over Peng’s whereabouts.
Novak Djokovic also spoke out following after winning his ATP finals opener on Tuesday calling the incident “shocking”.
Taking to his Twitter account on Friday morning, Murray said: “Female tennis player Peng Shuai whereabouts currently unknown after making sexual abuse allegations against Chinese government official.
“This speech gives us a reminder and some hope that things can change in the future. #whereispengshuai”
The post was linked to a speech by Barbora Krejcikova speaking about her own experiences of living in Czechoslovakia.
Japanese star Osaka also expressed her concern on social media.
She tweeted a note that read: “A fellow tennis player has gone missing shortly after revealing she has been sexually abused.
“Censorship is never ok.
“I am in shock at the current situation and I’m sending love and light her way.”
