Peter Leven says he is taking his role as interim Aberdeen manager “day by day and game by game”, despite racking up back-to-back wins.

Saturday’s 2-1 triumph at home to Ross County followed victory over Motherwell and gave the Dons some breathing space over their opponents, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.

It had been expected the Dons would appoint a new boss to replace Neil Warnock during the international break, but Leven remains in charge.

“I’m taking it day by day and game by game, unless someone tells me otherwise,” he said. “I’ll certainly be in on Monday in any case.

“We have good players here and maybe the little gap we now have lets them relax and go and show what we can do.

“We showed it a little bit against Motherwell and I tried to take the pressure off them this week, but we all know it was a big game and I’m glad to take three points.”

Aberdeen’s moved them level on points with Motherwell, six clear of County and five ahead of St Johnstone, but Staggies boss Don Cowie insists his side can still make up the ground.

Asked whether it was now between County and Craig Levein’s Saints for the play-off spot, he said “I don’t think so – there’s still seven games, 21 points, to play for.

“When you go into the split everyone plays each other at the bottom of the league so there’s plenty to play for.

“We’re not interested in anyone other than Ross County. I’m seeing really good signs from the group and, if we continue as we have been, then I’m confident we’ll pick up points.”
