Martin Canning admits he knows results must improve quickly to secure his job after holding talks with the Hamilton board in the wake of their 4-1 Scottish Cup defeat to Annan.

Canning admitted he's never felt so low as he did after the loss at Galabank, a result which continues Accies' winter slump.

Hamilton sit tenth in the Premiership table after one draw and four successive defeats in their last five top flight matches.

Ahead of the trip to St Johnstone, Canning says he needs to turn the club's fortunes around quickly.

Asked about discussions with the board following the Annan loss, Canning told STV: "We've touched on it [his future] and it's been talked about. I'm not naive enough to know that regardless of what is happening we need to start winning games.

"I know I've got to continue to work hard and we've got to turn it around.

"I've never been as low as I was on Saturday night and into Sunday. I watched the game back twice and you start to think I've got to get up and fight and go again. That's what I've done and the boys have responded well.

"It's been coming the last few games we've conceded four, three, four, three, four so it's not as if it is a shock. I wasn't expecting it from Annan obviously but if you continue to defend like that then you are in big trouble.

"From my point of view they've [the board] been nothing but supportive.

"I know it's a results business and at the minute we're not winning enough. If you go back to the end of November we beat Dundee United and went fifth in the league. In December we took one point from five games, which isn't good enough."
