The Scottish Cup Fourth Round always brings some surprises and this weekend is unlikely to be any different with some intriguing ties across the country.

The draw has pitted plenty of lower league sides against teams from divisions above and with varying form across the board there could be some big names looking on from the sidelines as the competition progresses.

Championship side Falkirk made it all the way to the final at Hampden last season and while it may be tough for teams from further down the ladder to manage a repeat, that doesn't mean they can't enjoy a day in the sun along the way.

STV has looked through the fixture list and picked out some of the games where an upset could be on the cards.

Airdrieonians v Dundee United

United's troubles this season mean that in normal circumstances a victory against the Tangerines would struggle to be classed as an upset but, in a match against a side two divisions below, fans will be travelling to Airdrie expecting a ray of light in what has been a dark time of late.

However, Mixu Paatelainen will be wary of taking anything for granted when his players haven't won a match since October. He's admitted that "a cup shock might be in the air" and spoken about how United must give everything to get through "a tricky tie".

Given the Premiership relegation favourites' tendency to ship easy goals at an alarming rate, new Airdrie boss Eddie Wolecki Black won't have far to look for video to use in motivating his players.

Airdrie's own defensive problems, that have seen them go 11 games without a clean sheet, mean that sitting in and hoping to frustrate and unsettle United isnt likely to work. Going on the front foot and hoping to get a goal that puts the fear amongst the high-profile players could bring real reward and further United's misery.

Shock factor: 3/5

Dundee v Falkirk

This intriguing tie might well be decided by which Dundee side turn out at Dens Park.

Since a run of four successive 1-1 draws ended in November, Paul Hartley's side have lost to Aberdeen, then gone down 3-1 to Motherwell, demolished Hamilton 4-0, been battered 5-2 by Ross County and defeated local rivals United 2-1.

With James McPake now out injured long-term, a defensive change is guaranteed and new signing Darren O'Dea is unlikely to feature.

Home advantage could count for a lot but Falkirk will travel east with confidence, having reached the final of last year's competition. They've already knocked Partick Thistle out of the League Cup this season though they may want to forget the 7-0 thumping at the hands of Ross County in the following round.

The Bairns are currently on an 11-match unbeaten run, including a win over Rangers and a draw away to Hibs, that's seen them rise to second in the Championship. While cup progress could be decided on who hits their best form on the day, this one could also be a measure of the true gap between the Premiership and the Championship.

Shock factor 2/5

Dunfermline v Ross County

Dunfermline are flying high at the top of League One and boast a potent attacking threat in the Faissal El Bakhtaoui, Joe Cardle and Michael Moffat, who have 30 goals between them so far this term.

Alan Johnston's side haven't known defeat since October 10, when they lost 4-0 to St Mirren in the League Cup and while that result puts a question over how they would handle a step up, there's no doubt they are currently on a roll.

County's own form is mixed with recent comfortable home wins against Kilmarnock and Dundee offset by away defeats to Inverness and Partick Thistle.

An added blow to County is the absence of first choice strikers Craig Curran and Liam Boyce. Alex Schalk and Brian Graham are in line to start up front for the Staggies.

Shock factor 5/5

Linlithgow Rose v Forfar Athletic

One of Scotlands most romantic names, Linlithgow Rose will finally feel at home in the fourth round after being forced on their travels during the last three rounds.

The Rosey Posey entered the competition after claiming the SJFA East Region Super League title last term and they dispatched Gala Fairydean Rovers before trips to the Highlands to face Clachnacuddin and then Wick Academy.

League One outfit Forfar Athletic will be welcomed to Prestonfield as Rose bid to become the first junior side to make the fifth round. The Loons sit second bottom with Gary Bollan replacing Scotland's then longest-serving manager Dick Campbell as boss at Stair Park.

Former Hearts, Raith Rovers and Leicester City midfielder Joe Hamill and striker Graham Weir form part of Roses' team for the 1.30pm kick-off with manager David McGlynn expecting Forfars open style to suit his side.

Shock factor: 3/5

Annan Athletic v Hamilton

Premiership side Hamilton Accies make their first competitive trip to Galabank to take on League Two promotion hopefuls Annan Athletic.

The home side can take inspiration from Albion Rovers' victory over Motherwell at this stage in 2013 while Accies have lost six of their last 10 league games.

In Peter Weatherson and Smart Osadolor, Annan boast a strike pairing who have netted 15 goals so far this term.

Martin Canning's men are without the suspended Dougie Imrie while Gramoz Kurtaj may remain sidelined with a hamstring injury.
