Martin Canning believes keeping Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premiership would be the first step to building on Alex Neil's legacy as he marks a year since he replaced his good friend as boss at New Douglas Park.

Neil departed for Norwich City last January with Accies sitting third in the table with Canning ensuring the club earned a second consecutive season in the top flight.

Canning believes he's learned a lot from his 40 games in charge, which include nine wins and 10 draws.

While Neil's stock has continued to rise after leading Norwich to the promised land of the Premier League, the past year has been a tough learning curve for rookie boss Canning but he believes he's stronger for the experience.

And he has received an early boost in 2016 with Darian MacKinnon and Dougie Imrie signing new deals to remain in Lanarkshire until 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Speaking to STV's Sheelagh McLaren, Canning reflected on his year at the helm, following on from Neil and his life outside football.
