St Johnstone's Premiership fixture against Aberdeen has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at McDiarmid Park.

The playing surface in Perth failed an 8am inspection carried out by match referee Bobby Madden, with the match called off as a result.

Heavy rain and strong winds have claimed a number of Scottish football fixtures over the festive and New Year period, with the League One game between Brechin and Forfar postponed on Saturday.

The League Two match between Berwick Rangers and Annan Athletic was also called off on Saturday, with conditions making the fixture unplayable.

"Continuous rain from Saturday into Sunday and with continuing rain forecast led the decision at it is hoped that by having the pitch inspection at 8am that supporters will be caused minimum inconvenience," a statement from the Perth club read.

Tommy Wright's side will now miss the chance to make amends for their mid-week defeat to Motherwell, with defender Tam Scobbie admitting that the Saints must be more prudent at the back.

"We just need to tighten up," he said ahead of Sunday's scheduled visit of Aberdeen. "We have been conceding quite sloppy goals.

"The manager has picked up on it, even when we were on the good run, we are conceding goals that we weren't conceding last year. It's something we need to rectify."
