Widespread issues for Vodafone customers who reported outages on broadband and mobile were not caused by a cyber attack.

On Monday, more than 130,000 reports were made on outages of coverage with Vodafone’s broadband, 4G and 5G services.

Thousands also reported problems with Sky, BT, Virgin Media, EE and others.

Vodafone customers began reporting issues around 3pm on Monday.

The company confirmed on Tuesday that the outage was caused by a non-malicious software issue.

A spokesperson for Vodafone UK said: “On Monday afternoon, for a short time, the Vodafone network had an issue affecting broadband, 4G and 5G services.

“This was triggered by a non-malicious software issue with one of our vendor partners which has now been resolved, and the network has fully recovered.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this caused our customers.”

Customers also had issues accessing the company’s own website, which was knocked by the outage.

The telecoms firm has more than 18 million customers in the UK, including around 700,000 home broadband customers.

Users of the Voxi mobile operator, which is also owned by Vodafone, also reported issues with its service.
