New data released by the Scottish Government has revealed Scotland’s top hotspots for XL Bully licences.

As of November 12 last year, 3,409 exemption certificates had been issued to owners across the country.

The Scottish Government introduced restrictions on XL Bully ownership in 2024 after legislation was passed in England, prompted by concerns over dog attacks.

This means that owners must now register their dogs and have them muzzled and on a lead when in public.

Owners must also microchip their dogs, commit to neutering them, obtain third-party insurance, and pay a £92.40 fee.

Those convicted of not complying with the new rules face a maximum of six months imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.

XL Bully owners who opt not to keep their dogs can apply for £100 to cover the cost of having the animal euthanised, along with a further £100 to compensate them for the loss of their dog.

Most certificates have been issued to owners in Aberdeen’s AB16 postcode, where 74 certificates have been issued.

Motherwell codes make four appearances on the top ten list, including in second place with 65 certificates.

178 postcodes had fewer than ten exemption certificates issued.
