Two Poundland stores in Scotland have been saved from closure after last-minute agreements with landlords.

The discount giant announced last week that it was closing 18 more stores across the UK, including branches in both Musselburgh and Livingston.

It’s part of the company’s restructuring and recovery plan, which was announced by the chain’s new owners earlier this year and will see a total of 68 stores close across the UK.

The latest round of closures are all taking place at locations where Poundland’s lease has expired.

However, the company said on Monday that the two Scottish stores will “remain open after a new agreement was struck with the landlord”.

Livingston will re-open after re-stocking on Monday October 13, and the company is awaiting confirmation of re-opening dates for Musselburgh.

Another Poundland store in Wales was similarly saved from closure.

In June, the Poundland chain was sold to the Gordon Brothers investment firm for £1.

The new owners previously stated that they intended to operate a network of around 650-700 stores, compared to the approximately 800 Poundland branches it had acquired.

Commenting on the latest store closures announced last week, Poundland’s retail director Darren MacDonald said: “We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.

“These special reductions, on top of the value we offer day-in-day-out across our wider network, will help
us leave these locations with pride.

“And when our doors close in these locations, we’ll look forward to welcoming customers to one of the
hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
