Travellers face continued disruption from Scottish airports due to technical issue

Scottish travellers are facing another day of disruption due to an air traffic control issue.

Passengers due to fly to London and other English destinations are facing cancellations or flights pushed back by several hours.

This is due to a technical issue in the air traffic control system operated by NATS, mostly affecting English airspace.

Some British Airways flights between Glasgow and London Heathrow/Gatwick were cancelled on Wednesday morning, while EasyJet cancelled its morning flight to Luton.

Several incoming flights from London have also been cancelled.

Passengers in Scotland have been warned they may face some ‘knock-on disruption’ after hundreds of flights were cancelled following a technical issue.

At Edinburgh Airport, a Ryanair flight due to depart for London Stansted at 7.10am has been delayed to 1.10pm.

In addition, an EasyJet flight to Bristol has been cancelled.

Currently, two flights between Aberdeen and London Heathrow, and two London-bound flights from Inverness have also been cancelled.

The air traffic control issue caused more than 2,000 flights to be cancelled across the UK on Tuesday, with problems still ongoing into Wednesday.

Thousands of passengers were left sitting on the tarmac at the airport waiting to jet off to their destination.

A statement from BA read: “Our teams have worked throughout the night to build a new flight schedule for today so we’re able to operate as many flights as we can, following the significant disruption we experienced yesterday as a result of the NATS outage. With so many planes and crew out of place, we’re left with no choice but to cancel more than 190 flights of our original planned schedule.

“While this incident has been completely outside of our control, we do not underestimate the impact it’s had on the tens of thousands of our customers who faced disruption yesterday and today, and we’re very sorry.

“If you have been disrupted, we’re doing everything we can to try and get you to where you need to be. Thank you for your understanding while we work to find solutions for everyone.

“Our phone lines are extremely busy, as are our chat lines, and we ask customers whose flights are cancelled to not come to the airport.

“If you no longer wish to travel today, you can move your flight for free up until Friday, September 11. You can amend your booking, or check best alternative flight solutions for cancelled flights on ba.com”

A statement posted by Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday read: “NATS has confirmed it has implemented a fix to the technical issue that was impacting UK airspace, including Edinburgh.

“There will continue to be knock on impacts throughout the rest of the day due to delays experienced across the UK. We are working closely with local air traffic control, airlines and other partners to minimise disruption where possible.

“Passengers should continue to check with their airline for the latest information on their flight.”
