Those taking ‘weight loss jabs’ have been warned not to reduce their dosage over the festive period.

Recent data suggests that over 300,000 people are being privately prescribed weight loss drugs in Scotland, however, more than 40% will reduce their dosage, according to clinically-supervised weight-management service Chequp.

More than one in 10 will stop taking the ‘weight loss jabs’ completely, with a majority restarting after Hogmanay.

Stelios Michailidis, a Pharmacist at Crighton Pharmacy, has urged those thinking about changing their dosage to discuss it with their healthcare provider due to the potential side effects.

He said: “There is a trend of people trying to miss a dose during Christmas to enjoy larger meals, which is concerning as this is not necessarily true because you can keep taking your medicine and you can still enjoy the meals that you like.

“Also, if they miss some doses, there will be a delay on the treatment plan, so that means that maybe the patient needs to buy more pens.

“We suggest a balanced approach, keep taking the medicines and try to pre-plan your meals. Maybe use half of the plate for fruits or vegetables, to make you feel full, keep hydrated and be careful with alcohol as well.”

Scots will also be changing their eating habits over the Christmas period. More than half will reduce their portion sizes and opt for lower-calorie options.

Over 10% of those taking the jab haven’t told family or friends they are on the medication this Christmas due to fear of judgement.
