The big summer letdown continues as we continue to see mixed conditions with no decent prolonged spells of fine weather yet.
A symptom of the poor season so far is the longest wait to achieve 25 degrees in July since 2010, when we didn’t achieve it at all.
We’ve hit 25C every July since 2011, although we had to wait until the 22nd of the month in 2019. In 2015 and 2018 we breached the 25C mark on the first day of July.
Last Friday was close with Dunbar in East Lothian reaching 24.7C. Lossiemouth, Moray, and Charterhall in the Borders weren’t too far behind with 24.3C and 24.1C respectively.
So not yet, but when, will the golden figure of 25C finally be breached? Or will this go down as one of the very rare Julys where 25C is never achieved?
Well, we get to have another go at it next week with warmer air moving back in which will push the mercury back towards the mid-20s in some spots – most likely around Moray, Perthshire and the Lothians.
A few models show a more aggressive push of warm air which could allow temperatures to surge beyond the mid-20s, although this is a small probability at the moment.
So it’s possible we could still break the mid-20s next week, but with just several days left of July time is fast running out to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
While the temperature rises again early next week, we once again will see this only last a few days before fresher conditions return later in the week.
August is likely to see the mixed summer continue, although with a chance of more regular warm spells – we wait with bated breath.
