A yellow weather warning for high winds has been put in place for parts of the country, with winds up to 80mph expected in some areas.

The Met Office issued the warning, which will be in place from 8pm on Saturday until 5pm on Sunday.

Residents in the Highlands, Orkney, Western Isles, Tayside, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Fife will be affected by the weather, with high waves expected in coastal areas, disruption to public transport including ferry services and short term loss of power.

STV weather presenter Philip Petrie said: “It’s a pretty damp and dismal start to the weekend as Scotland’s weather is being dominated by frontal systems on Saturday, coming from a low pressure system just south of Iceland.

“We start to see a massive squeeze in the isobars around the low pressure over the next 12 hours and this will cause quite strong winds.

“The Met Office have therefore issued a yellow wind weather warning, which originally only covered coastal parts of the north but has since been extended inland, warning of gusts of 60 to 70mph across parts of Angus, Dundee, Fife, Perth, Aberdeenshire, Moray, Orkney, the Outer Hebrides and the Highlands.

“In exposed coastal parts of the north and east, winds could reach 80mph.

“This will have a few impacts and may cause a lot of disruption – delays to ferries, bridge closures – but also it coincides with high spring tides, and therefore could lead to large waves and surges around the coasts.

“Come Sunday the winds will gradually ease through the afternoon and overall things turn a lot more settled thanks to a weak ridge of high pressure building across the country.”
