Scotland is braced for a major snow blizzard as the Met Office issues two weather warnings.
A yellow alert came into force from midnight and lasts until 3pm on Wednesday for the Grampians, Tayside, Fife, the Highlands, Orkney and Argyll and Bute.
Rain will initially fall as sleet before turning to snow with accumulations of up to 20cm expected.
Strong winds will lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow, especially in the north.
Disruption is expected on roads and railways due to the conditions.
A second weather warning for snow has also been issued for the Shetland Islands from 6pm on Tuesday until 11.59pm on Wednesday.
Persistent snowfall is expected in the region with accumulations of up to 10cm.
Road and bus services are expected to be impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
Scotland has already seen “exceptional” snow depths on mountain tops, with some ski centres quite literally having to dig their buildings out of the snow, said STV meteorologist Sean Batty.
The areas affected by the two yellow weather warnings are:
- Shetland Islands
- Angus
- Clackmannanshire
- Dundee
- Fife
- Perth and Kinross
- Stirling
- Aberdeen
- Aberdeenshire
- Moray
- Highland
- Orkney Islands
- Argyll and Bute
