After a very wet March in the east of the country, especially for Edinburgh, April is turning out to be no better so far.
Areas such as Kinneff, Inverbervie, Johnshaven and St Cyrus in Aberdeenshire have had eight week’s worth of rain in the first week and a half of April, with 89mm falling so far.
In Edinburgh, which is again proving to be a focal point for the rain this month, it’s been even wetter with 91mm falling since the start of the month. That means the capital is not far off nine week’s worth of rain so far. This is in stark contrast to the drier conditions we had in Edinburgh in April 2023 when only 33mm of rain fell through the whole month.
The wettest April in Edinburgh saw 147mm of rain fall. Even though we’re a good bit away from that at the moment, a few more very wet days could see that record being challenged.
Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy in Fife have also seen more than a month’s worth of rain so far, as well as Carnoustie, Arbroath and Montrose in Angus.
The driest place in Scotland so far this month is Drummond Castle, between Crieff and Auchterarder in Perth and Kinross where there’s only been 5mm.
Shetland and Orkney are also proving to be much drier so far with around 12mm of rain falling in April. The north Highlands has also been enjoying a drier than normal start to April.
For the time being the weather remains showery with some heavy bursts at times, especially in western areas this weekend. Later next week there are signs that the weather may settle down a bit and become drier. Beyond that it’s expected that storm tracks will be move to the south which would mean the wettest conditions would be concentrated on England and Wales towards the end of the month with drier weather here – let’s hope.
