Staff in hospitals in Scotland are asking visitors to wear face masks amid a deadly spread of flu across the country.

Public Health Scotland data showed flu cases have more than doubled in a week in Scotland, with hospital admissions rising by 70%.

The uptick in cases has taken place at an earlier time than in previous flu seasons.

A decision was made to halt hospital visits in NHS Ayrshire and Arran from December 4 due to a rise in cases.

Scotland’s Health Secretary has now warned that the flu jab is the “most important protection” that people can take.

Neil Gray said that the rise in flu cases is “undoubtedly” having an impact on accident and emergency.

Data released by Public Health Scotland shows 7.4% of A&E patients waited more than 12 hours in the week ending November 30, up from 5.7% the week before.

Meanwhile, the number of patients waiting under the four-hour target dropped to 17,320 (61.3%), down from 17,670 (65.6%) the week prior.

NHS Highland and Argyll and Bute staff in hospitals and community settings will be wearing masks as a protective measure.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde also said it is urging visitors to wear fluid-resistant surgical masks at all times while on hospital premises.

Health boards such as NHS Forth Valley and NHS Western Isles have introduced similar measures, with masks made available on arrival.

Professor Angela Wallace, executive director of nursing at NHSGGC, said: “Flu season is here, and we want to ensure that you, your loved ones and those who are the most vulnerable stay protected.

“By wearing a mask when you visit a hospital, or by following our simple suggestions if you are experiencing symptoms, you are doing your bit to help reduce the spread of the virus.”

An NHS Highland statement read: “This helps us protect our patients and keep our essential services running when you need them most.

“Please only visit NHS Highland sites if you are symptom-free and limit the number of visitors to relatives and loved ones to help keep everyone safe.”
