Scotland is set to be hit with more snow and ice as temperatures plunge as low as -10C.
A yellow ‘be aware’ warning for snow was issued in the Highlands on Monday morning and parts of Strathspey, Moray and western Aberdeenshire are expected to be affected later.
An alert for ice was also announced for northern areas early on Monday with much of the rest of Scotland to be hit later in the evening.
Last week, temperatures plunged below -12C in the Highlands, and Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and the outskirts of Edinburgh had their coldest weather for ten years on Friday night.
After a brief milder spell at the weekend, STV’s meteorologist Sean Batty says most of the country will return to icy conditions and temperatures around freezing.
He said: “After a milder spell with highs of 8C in the Hebrides, the cold air is back.

“On Monday night this will spread south with most of the country returning to icy conditions and temperatures around freezing. Lows of -10C are possible in the Highlands, where there is lying snow.
“Some of the rain we’ve had during Monday will turn to sleet and snow before clearing, with the main risk across higher ground of Perthshire, Edinburgh, West Lothian, Mid Lothian, Lanarkshire and the Borders.
“I always say, if you want mild weather at this time of year, you need to put up with the rain, and that’s been the case today. But tomorrow is going to be a cold crisp winter’s day with plenty of sunshine and highs of 3-5C. A few showers will affect the far north.
“With temperatures struggling, ice will be an issue throughout the day in some spots, especially in areas that are in the shade all day.
“This week is a real tussle between milder and colder air, and that sort of situation can lead to some large snowfalls on the hills, and occasionally to lower levels.
“These are the sort of situations that can sometimes catch us off guard as they can be tricky to forecast, with freezing levels rising and falling all the time and snow levels constantly changing.
“So while this week will be changeable, you should be prepared for the return of icy conditions at times, and if you live in higher areas, some snow.
“There’s a possibility what we’ve experienced recently is part of a bigger event which will bring a more prolonged spell of cold weather later in the month and more snow – something we will be monitoring closely in the coming days.”
