Scotland unites to applaud and thank vital NHS staff

A national applause has taken place as Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom showed their appreciation for NHS staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

The gesture to those “working at the front line” kicked off at 8pm and saw grateful individuals and families gather at their front doors, gardens and windows to “clap for our carers”.

“During these unprecedented times they need to know that we are grateful,” the organisers said.

Appreciation: Children across Scotland joined in the applause.

The applause was impeccably observed as tributes flooded in for emergency service staff from every corner of the country.

Staff at Glasgow University got creative as they shared an applause after an online pub quiz.

‘I am in awe’

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, whose sister and sister-in-law work for the NHS, took part in the applause after appearing on Scotland Tonight.

She said: “I am in awe every day of those who work in the front line of our NHS, never more so than now, and I’ll be applauding them.

“I just want to say, literally from the bottom of my heart, thank you to each and every one of you.”
