Scotland to be battered by heavy rain on Sunday as yellow weather warning brought forward

Scotland is set to be battered by heavy rainfall on Sunday after a yellow weather warning was extended by the Met Office.

Disruption is expected in western parts of the country from 6pm on Sunday, after a weather warning for Monday morning was brought forward by the forecaster.

Around 20 to 40mm of rain is expected to fall within the warning area, which covers Argyll and Bute, East and South Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Inverclyde, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire and parts of the Highlands.

However higher ground could see up to 75mm of rain fall during the warning period, which is in place until 9pm on Monday.

The Met Office has warned of the possibility of flooding in some areas and spray on roads.

In the meantime, commuters have been warned there may be an impact on public transport, with strong winds and the rumble of thunder likely.

After a somewhat settled start to the weekend, things will be going downhill through Sunday and into the start of next week as things turn wet and very windy.

Overnight into Sunday, isobars will tighten ahead of a low pressure system approaching. With the tight isobars it means that winds will begin to strengthen and to begin Sunday we will be seeing breezy conditions with gusts initially of 15-20mph. Throughout the day these will increase to around 35-40mph around parts of the Outer Hebrides and turning breezier across the whole of the country.

As well as the strong winds we will see persistent rain developing in the west through Sunday with some heavier bursts for the likes of Argyll & Bute with the best of any drier or brighter conditions remaining around the Moray Firth – where we could see temperatures reaching highs of only 20C. Elsewhere many areas will be cooler than today with the cloud and wind, so quite disappointing for August.

Then on Monday we will see strong winds occasionally throughout the day, and a windier day for the likes of the central belt and eastern areas compared to Sunday. A frontal system will ripple and wave across the country throughout the day bringing with it intense bursts of rain as the front ripples. The rain warning for Monday covers parts of the Highlands, Perth & Kinross, Stirling, Argyll & Bute, parts of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. Even within the warning area there will be gaps in the rain, but the best of the weather will be in the north east.

Despite the wet weather it will be a warm and humid day on Monday, because our air is coming in from the south, so we could be seeing highs of 24C/25C locally in any brightness. The rippling frontal system clears overnight to give way for a brighter day on Tuesday but overall things remain unsettled throughout the week.
