A schoolboy was arrested on Christmas Day after knives were seized in Glasgow as police responded to a number of incidents over the festive period in Scotland.

Police Scotland’s control room received more than 1,500 calls to 999, and nearly 2,000 calls to 101 on December 25.

Around 1.30pm on Christmas Day, officers attended Edmiston Drive in Glasgow following a report of youths in possession of weapons.

Two knives were recovered and a 15-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident.

Officers also arrested a 53-year-old man on Christmas Eve following an armed robbery at a shop on Lynedoch Street in Greenock on Monday, December 23.

A second man, aged 28, was also arrested and both spent Christmas Day in custody and were due to appear in court.

Police dog Nash also supported officers on Christmas Day in Dundee after the occupant of a car left the scene of a crash on Balgillo Road.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with road traffic offences, and was due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday, December 27, 2024.

Police said New Year is expected to be just as busy with officers policing the Hogmanay Celebrations in Edinburgh and Rangers v Celtic at Ibrox on Thursday where a proportionate policing plan is in place.

Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie said: “Our people demonstrate skill, goodwill and professionalism all year round, but I want to recognise their commitment at this time of year.

“Policing doesn’t stop over the festive period and while families across Scotland have been sat around dinner tables together, our officers have continued to provide a challenging and essential public service for our communities round the clock.

“I would take this opportunity to publicly reiterate and record my thanks for all they do and offer my best wishes for the New Year ahead.”
