A scenic train journey through Scotland has been named as one of the “best travel adventures” in the world by National Geographic.
Scottish adventurers looking for new experiences may not need to travel far for their next excursion as the Royal Scotsman train has made the magazine’s list for best adventures in the world.
The iconic railway journey came in at 14 on the list of 20 adventures that include the likes of diving with sharks in Western Australia and hiking volcanos in Panama.
Many people travelling from afar to Scotland will hope to hike waterfalls or play on a historic golf course, spending most of their time in the often unforgiving elements.
However, not every Scottish adventure has to mean roughing it, as the Royal Scotsman train glides among the moody lochs and dramatic peaks in style.
The train is set to debut new suites in May 2024 that will host interiors that reflect the “compelling landscapes through dark woods, wool tweeds, and richly patterned bespoke tartans” crafted by Scottish brand Araminta Campbell.
Adventurers will also be able wind down with a massage at the train’s onboard spa.
National Geographic highlighted that opportunities to tour castles and stargaze are available throughout passengers time aboard the train.
“Departing Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, the two-to seven-night rail journeys cross the heart of the Highlands, from Perthshire to Inverness to the rugged west coast.
“During stops guests can tour castles, stargaze in Cairngorms National Park, sample whisky at revered distilleries, and even take a dip in a loch,” the list said.
