Photographers have captured stunning images of the Northern Lights over Scotland as a solar storm reached earth on Monday night.

A massive burst of material from the sun known as a Coronal Mass Ejection caused a phenomenon known as a geomagnetic storm, which interferes with the Earth’s magnetic field.

As a result, the skies were awash with colour as those living in Shetland, Orkney, Aberdeenshire, parts of Ayrshire and Argyll and Bute were in with a chance of spotting the Aurora Borealis.

Talented photographers have sent STV News their colourful snaps from their evening snapping the natural phenomenon.
