More than 100 products containing chicken from sandwiches to ready meals have been pulled from shelves over fears of contamination with salmonella.
The Food Standards Agency said the outbreak was linked to Cranswick Country Foods’ factory in Hull.
As a result, supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Marks and Spencer have recalled dozens of items, with cafe chains Starbucks and Costa Coffee also pulling toasties, paninis and salads from shelves.
The affected products had use-by dates of between May 11 and 20 and customers have been urged not to eat the items and instead return to the point of purchase for a refund.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria which can be found in contaminated products and can cause food poisoning.
According to the NHS, symptoms include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
In a statement, Cranswick Country Foods said: “Cranswick can confirm that a routine internal inspection has identified the presence of Salmonella in a limited number of cooked chicken products prepared at our poultry facility in Hull.
“These products are sold as ingredients for sandwiches and meals through UK retailers and food to go outlets.
“As a precautionary measure, we have asked our customers to remove any of their products containing our ready to eat chicken produced during the affected period. We are working closely with the Foods Standards Agency and will collaborate with their experts to resolve the matter.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation into the possible cause of the contamination and the site will remain closed until the investigations are complete.
“The safety and quality of every product produced by Cranswick is our number one priority and all necessary protocols will be followed and completed before we restart production.”
A Food Standards Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident in relation to Cranswick Country Foods and are working with colleagues at the Food Standards Agency and Local Authorities to ensure any products which may have been affected are removed from sale as quickly as possible.
“The recall, which includes a wide variety of chicken products, has been carried out due to the detection of salmonella in chicken used to manufacture these products. As a precaution, additional products are also being recalled while investigations continue.
“This is a UK-wide recall and we are advising consumers who have bought any of the listed products not to eat them and, instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”
