Adobe StockA registered nurse has been banned from the profession after he was caught performing a solo sex act while in possession of a young girl’s underwear.
Iain Laing was under investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which released their report into his actions back in January 2025.
He referred himself to the NMC after he pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour with sexual aggravation.
Laing was entrusted to look after a neighbour’s dog between January 20 and 27 and was given a key to their home.
On January 20, a witness observed Laing entering the bathroom on CCTV, where he remained for about three minutes.
The witness was unsure what Laing was doing but found the behaviour “odd and slightly alarming”.
The next day, Laing was spotted entering a 13-year-old girl’s bedroom, where he remained for two minutes.
Afterwards, Laing again entered the bathroom and was in there for three minutes before reappearing holding what was understood to be a tissue.
Finally, on January 27, Laing entered the witness’s home address and headed straight into the daughter’s bedroom, where he remained for two minutes.
Laing thereafter opened the bathroom door, momentarily holding a set of pink women’s underwear in his hand.
He then turned, lifted his hand, and held the underwear towards his face.
Laing later said he was unaware that he was being monitored by CCTV and was subsequently arrested.
He pled guilty and received a community payback order and supervision order for three years and was placed on the Sex Offender Register.
The NMC panel were tasked with considering whether Laing should continue in his role as a registered nurse.
Concerns include the pattern of behaviour, lack of insight and remediation and the high risk of repetition.
The panel also considered the fact that Laing had referred himself to the NMC and had pled guilty, however, it was noted in the report that this accountability had waivered over time.
The report stated: “The panel took into account that Mr Laing had pleaded guilty, informed his employer and self-referred to the NMC.
“However, it is considered that his insight had not developed and, if anything, appears to have reduced over time.
“There was limited evidence that he fully understood the impact of his behaviour on the family, the breach of trust involved or the wider impact on public confidence.”
The NMC concluded that they had no other option but to strike Laing from the nursing register with immediate effect.
