New Church of Scotland moderator installed at online service

The church's general assembly has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Church of Scotland’s new global ambassador will be installed during a special online service.

Rev Dr Martin Fair will become the moderator of the church’s general assembly on May 16, with the event being streamed live from Edinburgh on the church website and Facebook.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of this year’s annual week-long church assembly.

Rev Dr Fair, who will replace Rt Rev Colin Sinclair, will make a live address during the service, which begins at 11am.

A skeleton crew at the General Assembly Hall will ensure social-distancing measures are observed throughout the event.

Church of Scotland principal clerk Rev Dr George Whyte said: “This is not how we planned things but we are thrilled that the service can go ahead and be shared widely through the website.

“Martin Fair is just the right person to offer us leadership and inspiration in these challenging times.”
