Scotland’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Morocco in the World Cup was watched by 1.2 million viewers in Scotland, STV has announced.

The figures are combined from STV and the STV player viewers, making it the broadcaster’s highest peak audience since June 2024, when Steve Clarke’s men took on Germany in the opening match of Euro 2024.

Across the UK, six million people tuned into the late night clash as Morocco’s Ismael Saibari netted decisively after only 70 seconds at the Boston Stadium.

STV Player received just under half a million live streams for the game (476k) – the platform’s highest since Netherlands v England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals in July 2024.

The viewing share for Scotland v Morocco on STV was 75%, which was 22 share points higher than the rest of the UK – highlighting just how monumental the game was for the nation watching at home.

Richard Williams, managing director of audience at STV, said: “In spite of the disappointing result, it’s clear from the viewing figures that the nation was right behind Steve Clarke’s men for last night’s tense clash with Morocco – no other group of supporters comes close.

“It’s been great to have Scotland back in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, and the ratings prove that shared experiences like this can bring audiences together like nothing else.”

Scotland now head to Miami to face Brazil in their final group C match on Wednesday.

Steve Clarke’s men know a point against the Brazilians will likely be more than enough to qualify for the latter stages for the first time in their history after opening up the group with a 1-0 win over Haiti.
