Wintry conditions are expected to continue into Sunday morning as temperatures plummet

Met Office extends yellow snow and ice weather warning across majority of Scotland into weekendAdobe Stock

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been extended into the weekend, as Arctic air brings freezing conditions across Scotland.

It comes after a yellow alert, covering the majority of Scotland, ended at midday on Friday.

Around 1 to 2cm of snow fell overnight in some areas, with as much as 10cm forecast in higher areas.

The wintry weather follows flooding in parts of western Scotland and in the east, from Aberdeenshire down to Fife earlier in the week.

On Friday, the Met Office issued fresh snow and ice warnings, extending the alerts into Sunday evening.

The first weather warning comes into force at 4pm on Friday and covers the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland, parts of Moray and Aberdeenshire and areas in Angus and Perth and Kinross.

The alert will end at 10am on Saturday, before a fresh yellow warning covering the whole of Scotland begins at 9pm, running into 10am on Sunday.

As much as 15cm of snow could fall amid the weather warning, while precipitation could fall on frozen ground in some areas, leading to very slippery conditions.

The Met Office said the snow will turn increasingly to rain into Sunday morning, with a steady thaw of lying snow then setting in.

Drivers have been warned to expect disruption on the roads, while public transport could be affected.

ScotRail has urged commuters and passengers to take care on platforms as surfaces could be slippy.
