Award shortlist includes the world’s largest chainmail structure and a revamped art gallery.

Five new buildings showcasing “architectural excellence” are in the running to be named the best in Scotland.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) will announce the winner of the 2021 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award in November.

Here’s a look at the contenders:

A complete transformation of the gallery concluded a decade-long redevelopment.

Bayes Centre, Edinburgh

A new building for Edinburgh University houses academics, students and external companies in data technology, robotics, maths and design informatics.

The Egg Shed, Ardrishaig

A regeneration project on the harbourside combines old and new buildings to provide tourism facilities.

National Sports Training Centre, Inverclyde

The sportscotland site is the UK’s first fully accessible residential sports facility.
