Supermarket giant Lidl is searching for a Scottish voice for new self-checkouts to be rolled out in all stores across the country this year.
Lidl is inviting Scots to submit recordings of themselves reciting familiar phrases from the bagging area.
A panel of judges will review the entries, with the winning voice set to become the official sound of Lidl’s Scottish self-checkouts.
It’s part of a £3m investment in the rollout of self-service tills across all Lidl stores in Scotland.
In a recent survey, 81% of Scots said they prefer a choice between staffed tills and self-checkouts, while 74% say they choose self-checkouts for speed and convenience.
How do I audition to be the ‘unexpected Scottish voice in the bagging area’?
To audition, budding voiceover artists should text the word “audition” to +447 4183 97936 via WhatsApp, where they will be guided through the process.
From Thursday, May 8, an audition booth will be popping up at stores in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Shoppers will be invited to step inside, grab the mic and “give it laldy” for a chance to bag the title of Lidl’s unexpected Scottish voice in the bagging area.
Customers can enter the Lidl Audition Booth between 10am-7pm at the following locations and dates:
- Aberdeen, Hutcheon Street, AB25 3TB – Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9
- Kingsway Dundee, 19 New Craigie Rd, Dundee DD4 7FF – Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11
- Inverness Telford, Inverness, Telford Street, IV3 5LU – Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13
- Anniesland, 868 Crow Road, G13 1HU – Sunday, May 18 and Monday, May 19
- Corstorphine, 1-17 Glasgow Road, Edinburgh EH12 8HW – Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21
The winner will also scoop £500 worth of Lidl vouchers.
Entrants must be aged 18 or over, permanently reside in Scotland and accept the competition terms & conditions in order to enter
Those wishing to audition have until 7pm on May 26 to enter before the line closes for judging.
The winner won’t be the only Scottish voice that can be heard across the nation.
In January, a Glasgow student was cast as the first-ever Scottish doorbell voice by Ring.
Azkah Sardar, who is studying medicine, heard about the job search on the radio and decided to audition at the Silverburn shopping centre.
Despite “growing up shy,” Azkah stood out among 300 candidates for the Scotland-wide casting. After being selected by judge Edith Bowman, she has been officially unveiled as Ring’s Voice of the Nation.
