Friends of former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara said he was “sitting up and talking” after suffering from bleeding on the brain.
The 46-year-old collapsed at his home in York at the weekend and was admitted to Hull Royal Infirmary on Sunday night before undergoing surgery.
Friends and former teammates of McNamara, including Darren Jackson and John Hartson, said his condition had improved.
“Hearing Jackie McNamara is sitting up and talking is wonderful news,” Hartson said on social media.
Jackson, meanwhile, told PLZ Soccer on Tuesday: “The positive news is that he’s had the operation and he was in an induced coma but we’ve just heard, I spoke to [former Celtic player] Tommy Johnson who was at the hospital today, he’s up speaking.
“He’s in and out of consciousness. They were thinking seven to ten days, he was going to be in an induced coma, but he’s speaking today, that’s very positive.”
On Tuesday afternoon Celtic manager Neil Lennon described McNamara as a “strong guy” and said: “Heās a fit boy for someone of his age and heās been fit all his life.
“Iām hoping and praying that he comes through okay.”
