A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for parts of the east of Scotland.

Edinburgh, East Lothian and Fife are all set to be hit by stormy weather until around 9am on Saturday morning, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office.

Parts of the Highlands, including Inverness, as well as Moray and Aberdeenshire can also expect inclement conditions until 8pm on Friday, experts said.

It comes as the soaking Scottish summer wash out continues across the country.

Around 30-40mm of rain could fall in certain areas, forecasters said.

“Heavy showers and a few thunderstorms are likely to develop through Friday afternoon, and although easing for a time mid evening, are likely to become more widespread overnight,” they added.

“The showers will be slow moving in places leading to hourly rainfall accumulations of 10-20 mm with the chance of 30 to 40 mm in a few hours. Lightning will be an additional hazard.”
