Dozens of people applying for Police Scotland jobs fail drug tests

Over 80 people who applied for jobs within Police Scotland over the last three years failed drug tests.

Figures released by the force showed that 85 applicants failed drugs tests during the initial recruitment phase between February 2023 and February 2026.

The total number of people who applied during this period was 11,408.

Drug tests, which are carried out in the final stages of the recruitment process, are conducted through hair testing, which allows police to detect drug use going back several years.

Samples can also be taken from urine or oral fluid samples if required.

Chief Inspector Alan Mulholland, from Police Scotland Recruitment & Selection, called the recruitment process “extremely robust”.

He said: “Police Scotland has extremely robust vetting procedures and we demand the highest levels of integrity from our officers and staff.

“Those who do not share our values have no place within the organisation.

“All candidates progress through a comprehensive recruitment process and are required to undergo drugs testing following their assessment and interview.”

A spokesperson for the Authority said: “The Authority maintains oversight of recruitment through its People Committee and receives an annual recruitment report. An independent review of Police Scotland’s recruitment processes in September 2023 found that while police officer roles attract a significant number of applicants, less than 20% of those who applied in 22/23 and 23/24 were successful. This demonstrates that there is a high threshold for applicant suitability in place.

“The Authority’s Complaints and Conduct Committee maintains oversight of vetting and receives an annual vetting assurance report. The Committee also receives a bi-annual update on progress to discharge recommendations made by HMICS in its 2023 assurance review of Police Scotland vetting.”
