Multiple pate products have been recalled over fears they could cause meningitis.

Supermarket chain Co-op issued the urgent recall notice through the Food Standards Agency on Wednesday.

The retailer warned that its own-brand Smooth Brussels Pate product could be contaminated with salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The warning said the 175g size of the product, with the best-before dates of November 19, 2024, November 21, 2024, and November 28, 2024, was at risk of contamination.

Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

The infection can be more severe in rare cases, causing serious complications such as meningitis.

People over the age of 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one-month-old and immunocompromised people are more vulnerable to listeria infections.

Customers are being urged not to eat the foods and to return all affected products to their local store for a refund or replacement or to contact the Co-op Customer Careline.
