A quirky take on Scotland’s popular empire biscuit is set to be rolled out in Lidl stores following a public vote.

The Caramelised Biscuit Empire was trialled at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh back in June and visitors decided it needed to be rolled out as a special guest bakery item at the discount supermarket.

The twist on the classic sees traditional jam swapped for a rich toffee filling, while caramel is added to the icing with a swirl of toffee sauce. A topping of golden caramelised biscuit crumbs finishes off the decadent treat.

The new treat will arrive in all 112 Scottish Lidl stores from Thursday, September 11 and will be produced by the supermarket’s long-standing supplier McGhee’s Bakery.

The icing on the cake will see Scots with the surname able to bag the bakery item for free when they download the Lidl Plus app, with the treat on sale for 89p for everyone else.

Glasgow-based McGhee’s has worked with Lidl since 2018 to supply products ranging from its large empire biscuits to packed rolls and cakes under the retailer’s Alba bakery brand.
