A flight to San Francisco made three loops over the Outer Hebrides after it reported a technical issue onboard on Wednesday.

The British Airways flight took off from London Heathrow at around 11.45am before the pilot issued an emergency alert over Scotland.

The plane looped over the Isle of Barra and off the coast of South Uist three times before it returned to Heathrow.

British Airways confirmed that the flight landed safely and passengers got off safely.

A spokesperson said: “The flight landed safely and customers disembarked normally following reports of a technical issue with the aircraft.

“We’ve apologised to our customers for the delay, and our teams are working to get their journeys back on track.”
