John Swinney is set to face MSPs at Holyrood for First Minister’s Questions on Thursday, as a row over a fire-and-rehire scheme at Glasgow City Council rumbles on.
The First Minister could face questions from opposition leaders on the fallout, which has seen the local authority plan to implement a new pay and grading system after the previous one was found to discriminate mostly against female workers.
On Thursday, the city council said it was able to secure funding for an additional year of pay protection, but claimed that Unison is refusing to put the offer to its members in a ballot.
The Scottish Government stepped in to the row last week after deputy first minister Jenny Gilruth urged the council to pause the plans.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s Labour conference speech could also be highlighted by MSPs, as the SNP continues to push for a second independence referendum.
Earlier this week, Burnham revealed in Liverpool that John Swinney said he would be the last UK Prime Minister on the day his father died.
Burnham said he shared the story to demonstrate his determination to prove Swinney wrong. In retaliation, Swinney said Burnham should “prove him wrong” and grant a second referendum.
First Minister’s Questions will take place from 2pm.
