Speaker Lindsay Hoyle chairing PMQs as nearly 90 MPs sign no confidence motion UK Parliament

Lindsay Hoyle is chairing PMQs as a growing number of MPs demand his resignation over the chaos in the House of Commons last week.

Some 87 SNP, Tory, Plaid Cymru and independent MPs have signed a motion of no confidence in the speaker over his handling of a debate on a ceasefire in Gaza.

Parliament descended into chaos last week when Hoyle decided to allow a Labour amendment to an SNP motion on Gaza to go to a vote.

The SNP said Hoyle’s decision, which saw MPs walk out in protest, went against precedent.

The speaker apologised for his actions and said he was trying to put the safety of MPs first. The SNP claimed he had been pressured by Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross, who is both an MP and an MSP, said trust in the speaker had been “eroded”.

At PMQs, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is likely to face questions about the economy ahead of the chancellor’s budget next week.
