An SNP councillor has been accused of stealing from a police station.

The allegation was made against Allan Stubbs, who represents Coatbridge North.

Stubbs works for Police Scotland as well as serving on North Lanarkshire Council.

He is also employed part-time in the office of Fulton MacGregor, the MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston.

Stubbs has been reported to prosecutors having been accused of the theft of property from Motherwell Police Station, where he is usually based.

Following an investigation, he was reported by officers to the procurator fiscal, who will determine whether charges are pressed.

Mr Stubbs is said to strongly deny the allegations that have been made against him.

When asked about the accusation, Stubbs told the Times newspaper: “I don’t know what the allegations are that you’re talking about.

“To be honest, my work life and my public life are very separate”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following an allegation of theft of police property from Motherwell Police Station enquiries were carried out and a report on the circumstances has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for consideration.”

A spokesperson for the SNP said: “We are not in a position to comment on an internal Police Scotland employment issue, which we understand involves a number of staff.”

A source close to Stubbs added: “Allan strongly denies the allegation made against him and awaits the outcome of the report.”
