Starmer to face PMQs after Sarwar calls for PM to step down

Anas Sarwar said the 'distraction needs to end' over the scandal surrounding the appointment of Lord Mandelson

Sir Keir Starmer will face MPs in the House of Commons on Wednesday, days after the Scottish Labour leader called for the Prime Minister to resign.

At a press conference on Monday, Anas Sarwar said the “distraction needs to end, and the leadership in Downing Street has to end”.

The political fallout came as Sir Keir battles to remain in No 10 following the scandal surrounding the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as US ambassador, despite his links to paedophile financier Jeffeery Epstein being known.

Starmer has faced increasing pressure over the scandal, with both his chief of staff and head of communications resigning in recent days.

However, members of the PM’s cabinet have publicly backed him despite the ongoing scandal and Sarwar’s calls for him to resign.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, home secretary Yvette Cooper, deputy prime minister David Lammy and Scottish secretary Douglas Alexander have all backed Starmer to remain in office.

Prime Minister’s Questions will begin at noon on Wednesday.
