Sir Keir Starmer will take part in his final Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, before being succeeded by Andy Burnham next week.
Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, will be declared Labour leader on Friday after winning the Makerfield by-election and will take office as prime minister on July 20.
In his final full week in No 10, Starmer has already joined allies of Ukraine for a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” before joining Bastille Day events in Paris.
On Wednesday, he will face Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch at the despatch box for the final time.
Starmer announced his resignation outside Downing Street on June 22, following months of pressure for him to stand down and make way for a new Labour leader.
His voice broke as he said: “When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job: being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy.”
The emotional statement followed a weekend spent mulling his future with his family at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence.
Starmer had faced growing calls to stand aside since Labour’s poor showing in May’s local and devolved elections.
A growing number of Labour MPs also lost confidence in Sir Keir’s ability to lead the country after a series of what were widely viewed as policy mistakes, and because they did not believe he could meet the challenge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK at the next election.
The House of Commons is due to rise for the summer recess on Thursday, with MPs set to return to the debating chambers on September 1.
