The Scottish Greens are re-establishing formal ties with their sister party south of the border after suspending the links in a row over alleged transphobia.

The Scottish Green Party said it will strengthen its relationship with the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW).

The two parties are separate organisations, and in October 2022 Scottish Green members voted to suspend their ties with the GPEW.

Members backed a motion which accused the GPEW of failing to tackle transphobia and showing a lack of respect for devolution.

This meant that GPEW members were not be able to automatically attend certain meetings of the Scottish Green Party but it did not stop informal cooperation.

The Scottish Greens have now moved to restore formal ties following a motion to their party council in December 2025 in the wake of the election of Zack Polanski as GPEW leader.

Scottish Green co-Leader Ross Greer said: “I’m really glad that our members have chosen to strengthen the relationship with our friends in the Green Party of England and Wales.

“Zack has made his position on Scottish independence and trans rights absolutely clear and has put equality and democracy at the heart of his leadership.

“Our team are looking forward to working with him to elect a record number of Greens in Scotland, Wales and England next May.”

Polanski said: “I’m delighted by this decision.

“It formalises the reality that our members and Scottish Greens share common values.

“I look forward to working together in the coming months and years to build our respective parties’ representation in local government, the Senedd and the Scottish Parliament.”
