Keir Starmer will face questions over the strength and resilience of UK-US diplomatic relations amidst Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on UK steel.
The Prime Minister is expected to be challenged on the issue at PMQs on Wednesday as the UK steel industry braces for a 25% import tax.
The UK Government has previously said it is unlikely to immediately retaliate, stressing the need for a “cool-headed approach” after last-ditch efforts to persuade Donald Trump to spare British industries from his global tariffs appeared to fail.
The Prime Minister discussed the issue with Trump in a phone call on Monday, but the tariffs were officially imposed at 4am UK time on March 12.
The UK steel industry has warned that the levy on US imports “couldn’t come at a worse time”.
Amidst this backdrop, SNP backbencher Dave Doogan is poised to ask Starmer to “make an assessment of the durability of UK-US relations” in the chamber.
