The Prime Minister will be questioned by opposition leaders just before chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to deliver the 2025 spring statement in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
Keir Starmer will likely be faced with difficult questions about the state of the British economy, rumoured service cuts, and feared tax hikes at PMQs ahead of the much-anticipated statement.
The statement is expected to heavily emphasise the UK’s increased spending on defence amidst what Reeves has called a “quickly changing world”.
However, there are wider concerns that the statement will include further cuts to welfare benefits and other unpalatable moves.
Tories have dubbed it an “emergency budget” despite the chancellor remaining firm. The consistent message from Reeves has been that the statement is not a budget, but a financial update and continuation of her existing strategy.
Labour has also previously denied that Wednesday’s speech will contain tax rises or a return to austerity.
However, many are anticipating further cuts to welfare benefits and government departments to be part of the statement.
With the spring statement dominating so much of the national agenda on Wednesday, it’s likely that it will also dominate PMQs at noon.
The chancellor’s spring statement announcement will follow PMQs at around 12.30pm.
