John Swinney will face MSPs in the chamber at First Minister’s Questions, amid pressure on Andy Burnham to help launch an agreed legal mechanism for a second independence referendum.

It comes after Burnham suggested on Wednesday that another Scottish independence referendum could be held if public opinion “shows demand for one”.

Downing Street later clarified that there had been no change in position and that a second vote was “off limits”.

However Swinney wrote to the Prime Minister, calling for a meeting to discuss how to create an agreed legal mechanism to hold a second referendum.

The issue could come up in the chamber when FMQs takes place from 2pm.
