John Swinney to face FMQs after £144m council cash boost announced

The First Minister will take questions from the opposition on Thursday afternoon.

John Swinney will face questions from the opposition after his government announced that councils in Scotland will receive £144m in extra funding to help them meet increased national insurance costs.

Finance secretary Shona Robison said the cash could also help avoid “inflation-busting increases” in council tax.

She announced the additional money for local authorities as she accused the UK Government of having “punished” Scotland’s public sector with the forthcoming increase in employer’s national insurance contributions.

However, Cosla has said that leaves authorities with a £97m funding gap to fill.

The First Minister is also likely to face questions on the news that hundreds of Grangemouth workers are facing redundancy.

Redundancy letters were sent to staff on Wednesday, with only around 65 of the roughly 500 jobs on the site to be saved.

Deputy first minister Kate Forbes described the news as “deeply regrettable”.
