Deputy first minister John Swinney has been forced to self-isolate after coming into close contact of someone with Covid.

Swinney, who is also the cabinet secretary for Covid recovery in the Scottish Parliament, revealed the news on Monday.

The 57-year-old SNP MSP for Perthshire North has now booked a PCR test and says he will self-isolate in line with the rules.

In a Tweet he wrote: “I have been advised tonight that I am a close contact of an individual who has tested positive for Covid.

“I have booked a PCR test and will be self-isolating in line with the rules. Thanks to all the contact tracers for their diligent work.”

The news comes as Scotland deals with an upsurge in cases.

Latest figures released on Monday showed that more than 7000 people had tested positive within the previous 24 hours.

And First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was also forced into a short-period of self-isolation last month after being deemed a close contact of someone who tested positive.
