John Swinney faces FMQs after losing two votes at Holyrood

The Scottish Government suffered a defeat on peak rail fares and another on free school meals on Wednesday.

John Swinney is answering FMQs a day after he suffered two defeats within an hour of each other at Holyrood.

MSPs voted in favour of the Scottish Government scrapping peak rail fares after it was announced they would at reintroduced by the end of the month.

It means a typical commute from Glasgow to Edinburgh will double in price.

Within the same hour, opposition parties also voted in favour of the SNP fulfilling its commitment to expand universal free school meals to all P6 and P7 pupils.

Both votes are non-binding and the Scottish Government says it cannot expand free school meals due to financial constraints.

Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, will reportedly miss First Minister’s Questions on Thursday due to ill health with deputy leader Jackie Baillie taking over.
