A former Scottish Labour councillor has been suspended from the party pending an investigation into an allegedly racist tweet.
Willie Young, the former finance convener at Aberdeen City Council, has been informed by letter that he has been placed on administrative suspension.
Mr Young apologised last week after posting an image of a fortune cookie presented as a replacement coronavirus test, the Press and Journal newspaper reported.
Inside the fortune cookie, the scroll of paper showed stereotypical broken English and a base caricature of a Chinese person, complete with a conical rice hat.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints of racism extremely seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken.”
Mr Young is a member of the Aberdeen Central Labour group and also serves as a Deputy Lieutenant, representing the Queen at civic functions in the city.
